OTTUMWA – Endorsements from two leading newspapers in the Second Congressional District underscore the depth of her message and electability, Republican candidate Mariannette Miller-Meeks said today.
Referring to the popular, 15-term GOP incumbent defeated in 2006, the Iowa City Press-Citizen described Miller-Meeks as "the Republican most ready to reclaim Jim Leach's mantle." In backing Miller-Meeks, the editorial also gives her an edge in integrity over Cedar Rapids funeral home operator Peter Teahen.
The newspaper's editorial board writes that Miller-Meeks "brings much authority from her personal story as well as credibility from her leadership in academic and medical circles. In fact, the June 3 primary question boils down to whether Second District Republicans want to go with Teahen's experience or with Miller-Meek's intelligence and energy. We think the Second District – and the legacy of Jim Leach – would be served best by Miller-Meeks.
Meanwhile, the Ottumwa Courier noted that Teahen's "singular focus on the population center of the district — Linn and Johnson counties — leaves the rest of the district out of the loop." "The clear choice is Miller-Meeks. And when it comes to issues, she is very clear about her vision for the district and the country," the Courier editorial states. "And when it comes to immigration, Miller-Meeks does not hesitate — amnesty is not a solution. She said the government must secure borders and use biometric data to identify those who may be in the country illegally."
The Ottumwa newspaper editorial concludes, "In the end, voters would be wise in selecting Miller-Meeks as the Republican nominee for the Second Congressional District."
Miller-Meeks said the endorsements indicate the broad-based support she has enjoyed throughout the district.
"On issues that matter to voters in the Second District, I reflect their values and priorities and the people who are watching this race recognize that fact. They want a member of Congress who will do what they say they're going to do. I'll work to make health care more affordable, accessible and portable. That helps families and businesses. I'll work to cut federal spending and make sure government's priorities are in the right place," Miller-Meeks said. "On tax reform, immigration, energy policy, veterans' rights and the economy, I'll take the lead to make things happen."
